Flights Cancellation Due to a Travel Advisory


If your flight is affected by something like an airport closing, bad weather, or other issues, you can any action from the following:


  • Passengers can cancel their flight and get a refund, but it depends on the rules for your ticket type.

  • They can change their travel dates without any extra cost, but it has to be for the same place.

  • You will have to pay more if the new dates cost more, but there might be some dates when this rule does not work.

  • Customers can switch to a different destination, whether or not they want to change their flight dates.

  • If you decide to fly to a nearby airport instead of your original one, you will not need to pay more.

  • But if you choose a faraway airport, you have to pay extra.

  • If your new ticket costs less than your original one, the refund rules for your ticket type will still apply.


WestJet 24-Hour Cancellation Policy


If you cancel your flight within 24 hours of booking, you won't be charged any cancellation fees. This applies only if you booked your flight at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time. If you booked a flight departing within 24 hours, regular cancellation rules and fees apply.


WestJet Cancellation Policy after 24 Hours


  • If 24 hours have passed since booking, basic fares cannot be cancelled, and you will not get any Travel Credit for them. Other fares might have a cancellation fee, depending on the type.

  • But there are some exceptions:

  • Passengers can cancel Business Flex and PremiumFlex fares on all routes without any fee.

  • Also, they can cancel Domestic EconoFlex fares (for flights within Canada) for free.

  • Please Note: The cancellation fees are charged for each person and each direction of travel, except for flights to/from Europe, where the fee is charged for each person and each transaction.


Cancellation Policy for Cancelled or Rescheduled Flights 


Customers can get a full refund if:


  • The WestJet flight gets cancelled.

  • Your WestJet flight is rescheduled, and the difference between the new time and the original is more than 90 minutes.

  • The original WestJet flight with no stops now includes one or more stops in the schedule.


WestJet Cancellation Policy for Death or Illness


  • You might have to pay cancellation fees if:

  • Someone in your immediate family passes away.

  • You become seriously ill.

  • You get military orders.


Please Note: WestJet will decide whether to waive the cancellation fees, and you will need to provide valid proof. Call WestJet's customer service number to get more details.


WestJet Cancellation Policy by Fare Type


Basic Tickets:


  • You can only cancel Basic tickets within 24 hours of purchase, as long as you bought them at least 24 hours before your flight. Outside of this time limit, you cannot cancel them.


Econo Tickets:


  • You can cancel Econo tickets with a fee after the 24-hour window. The fee amount depends on your route and whether you cancel the flight more than 60 days before departure or within 60 days.


Econo Flex Tickets:


  • You can cancel Econo Flex tickets for free on domestic flights within Canada, regardless of when you cancel. Depending on when you cancel, there will be a cancellation fee on other routes.


Premium Tickets:


  • Premium tickets can be cancelled, but you have to pay s fixed fee. However, PremiumFlex tickets can be cancelled without any fee. The fee for a standard Premium ticket varies based on your route and when you cancel (more than 60 days before departure or within 60 days).


Business Tickets:


  • Most Business tickets (except BusinessFlex tickets) have a cancellation fee, which depends on your route and when you cancel. However, BusinessFlex tickets can be cancelled without any fee. For the specific cancellation fees for standard Business tickets, refer to the "WestJet Cancellation Fees" section.


Award Tickets:


  • The cancellation fee for award tickets depends on the type of ticket you bought, your flight route and the departure time.

  • WestJet's award program is unique. Instead of earning and using miles, you earn rebates that go into your WestJet Travel Bank when you fly. Later, you can use these funds for future flights.


WestJet Cancellation Fees


The cancellation fee depends on a few things:


  • The type of ticket you bought

  • The rules that come with it

  • When you decide to cancel. 


Cancellation within 24 Hours:


  • If you cancel any flight ticket within 24 hours of booking and your flight is scheduled to depart more than 24 hours from when you booked it, you do not have to pay any cancellation fee.


PremiumFlex and BusinessFlex:


  • If you purchased PremiumFlex or BusinessFlex fares, you can cancel them for free, the destination does not matter. The money which you paid will be back by your original payment method.


Econo Flex:


  • You can cancel Econo Flex fares without any fee, but only if you are flying within Canada.


Cancellation Fees Details


The cancellation fee can vary:


  • If you are flying to or from Europe, the fee applies to each person and each transaction.

  • On all other routes (not Europe), it is charged for each flight, each direction, and each passenger.

  • You can cancel all types of fares (except Basic fares) up to 2 hours before your flight takes off.

  • It is called a No-Show if you do not cancel before that.


Cancellation Fees for Different Fare Types


If you cancel your ticket at least 60 days before departure:


Econo Fares:


  • Within Canada: CAD 50-59

  • Canada to Other Destinations (excluding Europe): CAD/USD 50-59

  • Canada to Europe: CAD 100-118, EUR 68, GBP 56


Econo Flex Fares:


  • Within Canada: Free

  • Canada to Other Destinations (excluding Europe): CAD/USD 25-30

  • Canada to Europe: CAD 100-118, EUR 68, GBP 56


Premium Fares:


  • Within Canada: CAD 50-59

  • Canada to Other Destinations (excluding Europe): CAD/USD 50-59

  • Canada to Europe: CAD 100-118, EUR 68, GBP 56


Business Fares:


  • Within Canada: CAD 100-118

  • Canada to Other Destinations (excluding Europe): CAD/USD 100-118

  • Canada to Europe: CAD 100-118, EUR 68, GBP 56


If you cancel your ticket within 60 days of departure:


Econo Fares:


  • Within Canada: CAD 100-118

  • Canada to Other Destinations (excluding Europe): CAD/USD 100-118

  • Canada to Europe: CAD 250-295, EUR 165, GBP 138


Econo Flex Fares:


  • Within Canada: Free

  • Canada to Other Destinations (excluding Europe): CAD/USD 100-118

  • Canada to Europe: CAD 250-295, EUR 165, GBP 138


Premium Fares:


  • Within Canada: CAD 100-118

  • Canada to Other Destinations (excluding Europe): CAD/USD 100-118

  • Canada to Europe: CAD 250-295, EUR 165, GBP 138


Business Fares:


  • Within Canada: CAD 100-118

  • Canada to Other Destinations (excluding Europe): CAD/USD 100-118

  • Canada to Europe: CAD 600-708, EUR 396, GBP 336

  • (Note: PremiumFlex and BusinessFlex fares can be cancelled without any fee)


Important Note:


If passengers have booked Member Exclusive fares, the cancellation rules will depend on the fare bundle they choose.


  • If they booked Member Exclusive (Premium), the same rules that apply to Premium fares will be in effect.

  • If you booked Member Exclusive (Economy), the rules for Econo fares will apply.

  • After you cancel your booking, any remaining money left after deducting the cancellation fee (if applicable) will be stored as Travel Bank Credit.

  • You can use this credit for future trips.


Note: If you possess a PremiumFlex or BusinessFlex account you have a PremiumFlex or BusinessFlex ticket, any refunded amount will go back to your original payment method.


WestJet No-Show Policy Explained


You have the option to cancel your flight up to 2 hours before it is supposed to leave.


  • However, if you do not check-in, get on the plane before the deadline, or request a same-day change before the flight takes off, it is considered a No-Show.

  • In this case, you will lose the entire fare you paid.

  • Any money left (if there is any) will be refunded or credited according to the original rules of your ticket.


How to Claim Compensation


Passenger for each leg of their journey needs to fill out a compensation form.


Compensation Based on Delay Length:


  • For delays lasting 3 to 6 hours, you may receive $400.

  • For delays of 6 to 9 hours, you may receive $700.

  • For delays lasting 9 hours or more, you may receive $1,000.


Important Notes:


  • When your claim is approved, you will get an email at the address you provided, along with instructions on how to receive your compensation electronically.

  • Ensure that the information you provide matches your booking details exactly. Your claim will not be processed if the information is incorrect.


How to Cancel Your WestJet Flight


There are three ways to cancel your WestJet flight:


  • Call WestJet's office in your country.

  • Use the "Manage trips" option online (if you bought your ticket directly from WestJet).

  • Contact the travel agent who sold you the ticket.


Cancelling Your WestJet Flight Online


Follow these steps to make an online cancellation


  • Visit WestJet.com.

  • Choose "Manage trips" from the options.

  • You'll see a dropdown box on your screen. Click on "Manage flights."

  • Enter your reservation code and last name to find your trip.

  • Click the "Search" button.

  • Your flight details will appear. Select the flight you want to cancel.

  • Complete the cancellation.

  • After your cancellation, you will get a confirmation email at the address you provided during booking.

  • The money left after deducting the cancellation fee will either go into your WestJet Travel Bank or back to your original payment method, depending on your fare type.


Note: If you purchased your ticket from a travel agent (online or offline), you should contact them directly to cancel your booking.
